Hey guys, I installed a floor in the back of my civic hatch for my subs. I'm trying to find the optimal position for my subs. I have them up against the front seats, facing the hatch, and i swear u can get more bass from a pair of 6x9s. When I had the entire interior in there, i had them in the very back of the car, like 4 inches from the hatch and they hit really good, but now that they are further away, they sound like ass. I'm guessing its the lack of a reflex wall thats causing the problem. I tried tuning the amp but that got me nowhere, it actually sounds worse now. I'm not sure where to put the gain at, I have a Clarion DXZ545MP HU, and a Diamond Audio 600.1 D3 amp. if that helps any. Here is a picture to show u how the subs are positioned right now. It's temporary. I'd like to keep them as far back as possible so I can still use the back of the car, but I'll sacrifice trunk room in neccessary. Also, before u start criticizing, im not finished with the install. thanks.

I think you made a demonstation of the effect of cancellation.  The way I understand it, when you had the box at the rear, facing the rear, the front and rear waves from the sub were arriving at your listening location at about the same time...very little cancellation.  Now, the front waves are about 180 degrees out of sync with the rear waves, so the effect you get now is very little sound.

This was explained in a test made to figure out why the sound is louder sometimes when the trunk is open.  I thought I saved the article, but can't find it.  It has to do with the waves reflecting off the rear of the trunk and then back into the car, as opposed to the waves off the back of the box going directly into the car.  The closer you get to a 180 degree diference, the less audible sound you get in the front seat.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

i'm not getting what you mean by front and rear waves? shouldnt there only be one set of waves? the only difference from this setup and the previous one, is that last time the subs were about even with the rear wheel wells.

Found it.

I was referring to http://www.installer.com/tech/aiming.html which I remember reading a few months ago.  You're noticing a big decrease in sound as you moved the enclosure farther forward in the trunk.  This could be why.

Thanks for the link. I spent a good hour or so in my car the other day just tuning, and re-tuning, and I eventually got it sounding pretty darn good. They are still in the same spot. I think i'll keep the settings the same, and move the box around, see what I can accomplish. Thanks again.

I had 2 15" JLW6's in a saturn a few years back and the enclosure was already customized for whatever vehicle they came out of - but I couldn't seem to get it in the trunk for the life of me.
I finally got it in there and the subs had no choice but to face straight up (inside the trunk mind you). This didn't seem practical, but I powered them up with the 6.5" speakers removed from the rear deck by accident and the back seat down. OH MY GOD! I had never heard such an incredible sound. By the end of the day tweaking it I had no choice but to dynamat the entire trunk and rear deck. I have yet to reproduce a better setup to this day, but I haven't really tried either.
My point being you should be glad you have a hatchback and flip those suckers up facing the back glass. That usually has worked best in most hatchbacks that I've done.
