what would cause a 3 volt drop in the power wire of an amp only when the car is turned on? no other wiring is affected. the battery does not have a voltage drop, only the amp power wire.

The voltage drop occurs when the car is turned on or when the amp is turned on?  Where and how are you measureing the voltage drop?

Any voltage drop is caused by one of two things: source sag or resistive losses. If the battery stays good (12V ish) when the amp is on, it means you're losing the voltage in your wires. Without knowing the guage of the power wires, their termination method, and the same info for the ground, all I can do is theorize.

9 times outta ten its either a bad ground.  (either on a poorly welded piece of metal or loose) or the fuse holder has a bad connection somewhere.
