A good place for an old bloke to start is at the Crutchfield Learning Center.  After you've briefed up on the basics and have a feel for some of the lingo used, check through your local listings for audio shops and take a trip over to see what they have to offer.
Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

Hiluxx, I'm guessing he is a P Plater yeah? Try and keep him sensible, don't go overboard with money either...if he already has a cd player in his commordore (stab in the dark here!) then you could probably get a single 12" sub in the boot for around 500-600 that will include, sub, box, amp and wiring kit. The main thing I would suggest is don't use super cheap auto gear as you will spend another couple of hundred chasing noise around the car! Here are some tips for you to keep in mind as well, I'm guessing you have knowledge about car electrics already...

Fuse the main power cable at the battery as close as you can.

Mount the box against the back seat and the speaker facing towards the rear of the car.

Mount the box securely as well, I know how I drove when I was a p plater...it moved around....A LOT

The babyseat bolt is a great earth point to start with.

Run your power cable down one side of the car and the RCA leads from the CD Player down the other side.

It doesn't look great but I would suggest putting a grill over the sub as well.

The trigger/remote wire connects upto the power antenna lead on the back of the CD player.

DON'T LET HIS MATES TOUCH IT.

Mount the amp to the box or underneath the parcel shelf

Did I mention...DON'T LET HIS MATES TOUCH IT.

Actually if you hook the amp remote up to the power antenna lead then he will only get the amp to turn on when the radio is on. What you want to do hook it up to the remote wire off the back of the deck. I am speaking in general terms here, some decks may put out a constant signal on the antenna lead, but not any of the ones I deal with.

Welcome to Australia, here is a quick linguistics lesson...

Earth = Ground

wire cutters = side cutters

Boot = trunk

Bonnet = "Da Hood"

speakers = those round things.

Subs = the bigger round things

Amp = that thing that makes everything louder

motor = engine

engine = motor
