speakers go silent, is it my amp?

I recently had new speakers put in and hooked them up to my amp which I just bought also. All 4 speakers are 6.5" Infinity Kappas which run at 75 RMS. My amp is an MTX Thunder 564 4 channel amp that runs at 70 watts RMS x 4 at 4 ohms. I had front speakers and amp installed at the same time, then had back speakers installed a few weeks later. Front speakers + amp worked fine, got my back speakers installed and they were all fine until the drive home. Now every once in a while I'll be driving and the music will stop. Doesn't crackle or distort, just stops. I'll be listening to a CD and the cd still plays because the time on the song keeps going and after about 5 minutes the sound will cut in like normal. I can still work with my cd player, open and close it, do whatever. So I'm guessing my amp is overheating and causing the volume to just disappear until it cools down? Why would it do that if it happened like 15 minutes just after I installed the rear speakers and hooked them up to my amp? Is my amp not powerful enough to handle my speakers? I'm new to car audio like so many other people, so I'm looking for help. =/

sounds like a shorted wire somewhewe, more then likely on one of the rear speakers.   You should take it back to where it was installed and have them repair it right away2009 0-1000 Trunk WR 154.0DB 2009 1001+ Trunk WR

Thanks for the input, I'll definitely do that. Would the wire from the rear speakers prevent the front ones from playing though too? Just curious, thanks for the reply!

Yes, the amp will go into protection mode and stop the whole unit from operating.Check all advice given with a meter

I think overworked2 got it. It sounds like a short, or for some reason, your + and - wires are touching causing the amp to go into protection mode. But I'm pretty sure that it's one of the two - I had this happen to me recently.

do you think it's the connections by the amp or to the speaker? I have a 96 Acura Integra and my 6.5" kappas are a SUPER tight squeeze in my rears, no way do I wanna take those out to look at the connections, it was so hard to get them to fit. So hopefully it's something connected to the amp then
