I'm thinking about buying this driver. Crutchfield has it on clearance for $160 (almost $200 off retail!!), and it'll handle the 550 watts from my Alpine MRD-M501 with some to spare.
I'm debating between the MB Quart and the Alpine Type-R right now. Looking for mostly SQ, but still able to get loud...
Any advice??

Normally I would be all over it, however consider this important fact. Once you custom build the box, it is set to that particular sub. The reason why you seee Quart on Crutchfield so cheap is because Rockford (who owns the US rights to the MB Quart name) has basically put MB Quart out of business, is no longer importing any of the product, will not give the name back to MB Quart (look for them under the name 3rd Acoustics or Third Acoustics) and of course since Rockford basically ran a great line into the ground, have dumped all remaining inventory on Crutchfield for them to clear out. So warranty wise, sure it will have a warranty, but good luck getting a sub repaired or replaced by MB Quart as they are no more. So the nice custom box you just built, you'll be building yourself another one for whatever sub Crutchfield sends you to replace the MB Quart sub that you sent in for warranty. This scares me almost as much as Bose.

haha....thanks for the advice.
Sooo....If I really don't mind buying another $22 sheet of MDF, drawing plans, etc. Also, most 12" subs use a 1 cu ft. sealed box, so it may actually work....haha
so, do you think I should pull the trigger on the Alpine Type-R?? I heard one in best buy a while back, and I wasn't really impressed. Now, this was in a ported box, and the only thing they had in was a rap cd (oh boy...)

It is all about the box. I just built a slot port box for a older type R and the thing lumped and lumped hard. Surprisingly, it also sounded good as well. Advice, find an Eclipse aluminum, it is well worth the extra $.

I would take the chance on the PWE, it is a much better sounding sub than the type R.

I think I'm gonna buy the PWE while I still can....now I just need to get my boss to give me a paycheck!!
I'd love to go w/ the Alluminums, but that's just more than I wanna spend on a sub now. If I'm gonna go up that far, I might as well buy a f'ing brahma!
