I have a 2003 ext cab silverado its an LS with bose but no xm or onstar.  i would like to install a new head unit since the factory one has limited eq settings and pioneer has a very nice looking dbl din.  do i have to relocate the factory or can i just get one of those modules to keep the annoying chimes and 10 min playback after ignition is shut off.

You can do either.  If you buy the Scoche harness, then you have to keep the factory HU, but you can buy the Metra and it gets rid of relocating the HU.  As long as you tap the switch into some accesory in the fuse box, then you won't have the radio turning on/off for 10 minutes.

Don't know about  the Metra adapter, but if you use a Scosche or Soundgate HU-replacement harness, they generate the switched 12V+ from the data bus signal inside the chime unit. It would be easier to use the Soundgate piece - you need the Digistar-X for dealing with the Bose system.
Experience gained is directly proportional to the amount of equipment destroyed - break it & learn!
