Sub Mounting

Every pic I have seen showing sound waves off of a sub, show the waves coming out from the front of the sub. How does a sub sound decent if you mount it facing in. Wouldnt the sound just go inside the sealed enclosure and sound terrible.

The same sound wave that is produced from the front of the cone is also produced off the back of the cone, only 180 degrees out of phase.
