What do you mean "shorts out", does the deck's fuse blow?  If so, find another source of power for the changer/xm unit.

Okay, and if you take the switcher out of the loop, the problem goes away?  Try another switcher.  Better yet, you may look into another brand.

To say I'm less than satisfied with Sony mobile products would be an understatement.  I just had another problem with one of their products today.  A Sony deck was acting up in a boat I did with the wired remote.  If the remote is plugged in, you cannot control anything through the deck, or the wired remote.  You can control it with the wireless remote, but only if you hit the off button, then source.  With the wired remote unplugged the deck works fine.  Resetting the unit did nothing for the problem.  We had to order another remote.
