Hey all i got a quick question for you.  Is it tottally necessary to have a subsonic filter when doing a ported box and what is the purpose of one.  Also what can happen if you dont have one? will it damage the speaker? Thanks guys!!

Yes, very important.
What happens is below the tuning frequency is the sub moves into over-excursion with very little power.

The sub-sonic filter is a high-pass crossover that operates at low frequencies.

If you are tuning 35hz and below it is not really  neccessary for a subsonic filter.  The sub will play the lows just fine.  Below tuning, it is about motor strength.

PPL have been running ported subs forever without subsonics.  They just came about in the last 5 years or so.  They are not neccesary, but if you have it....  use it.
