I am shopping for a head unit,  Right now I am looking at the Rockford Fosgate RAV-DVD1.  On rockfords website it doesn't look like they make head units any more.  Are the rockford head units any good?  Do they still make them?  who makes the best?
Thanks

Some of the earlier Fosgate decks were said to have been pretty nice with a 24 bit DAC. I don't really recall the number but it was a few years back.
Who makes the best is a hard one to say but there a few that stand above others. Like Nakamichi although they are more unreliable, Eclipse makes a great deck that includes functionality, and Mcintosh still manufactures great decks but are very simple.

If I remember correctly, even when rockford used to make first class equipment, their HUs fell a little short of the pack.  Now that rockford is making garbage everything else, i would imagine the HUs are even further in the gutter than they were a few years ago.   (No Offense to the RF'ers out there!)

The 8250 and 8240 were made by denon, back some time and those were probably ok, but I agree that their new stuff is not up to par at all.

I love my RF9210 in my SUV... it has 5 Volt Preouts and its 2 ohm stable.. hell I dont think anyone makes a 2ohm headunit besides Rockford

If you can get the RAV-DVD1 at a good price pick it up, if you dont like like it sell it

2 ohm head unit? that's stupid!

if you're running two sets of speakers on each channel, you need a 4 channel amp.. 20 watts rms isn't going to do shhh for 2 6.5's

that's worse then the "rear channel bridge for subs" idea........   garbage

get an alpine, shut off the internal amp, and get a 4 channel...

or just get the alpine, or a pioneer.. there's no reason to try and find obscure brands... eclipse's are really nice, but from all the charts i've seen, their fail rate is way high compaired to your standard everyday crap, like pioneer jvc alpine and all the usualls...

Alpine and Pioneer sell more decks so the ratio will be less repaired decks of course, if Eclipse had the same volume in sales the defect rate would even out.

Pioneer has one of the higest failure rates and highest incidences of factory returns of any mass-market HU.  Eclipse has one of the lowest.  Alpine is in the middle.  I'd take an RF 8250 any day of the week.  One of the best heads ever made, designed and built by Denon as dwarren said.  I really don't know much about the recent RF heads.  For pure SQ, not much in the US or Canada beats the Nakamichi (reliability issues aside) or the McIntosh.
