Here's the deal. I'm going to be building a sub enclosure for a buddy. He has a 2003 Yukon XL and the box will be built to cover the whole floor space in the rear. It will be about 10" h and the sub will be loaded up towards the rear seat firing up. Now...I could load the port on the face of the box, firing up with the sub, however...things will be loaded in the truck that could potentially roll over the port opening and block it. I was wondering if it would make a difference if I load the port on the front of the box, firing out under the rear seats?

In a nutshell, does it matter where the port is located as long as you have clear space in front of it???

9 times out of 10 without having a lot of expereince on box building experience you should face the port the same direction as the sub, by facing the sub upward you are going to loose a great deal of bass in that car. think of bass like water it take to whatevery shape you put it in. so if you face it upwards and the bass hits the roof, some of it goes to the front of the truck and some to the back, but where are you sitting, in the front so why waste some goint to the back. i suggest firing them both back, use a slot style port that L shapes inside and find a nice grill to protect you woofer

Well...the only problem with that is my buddy doesn't want a box that is going to sit up too high as he still wants to use the back area of his truck. The box will be part sub enclosure and part storage compartment.

I can understand about losing some bass if it were a sealed box, but with a ported box, don't you get to direct where some of the bass goes as in the direction of the port?

There will be a custom protective grill over the sub, that's not a big issue. I just wanted to have the port in a location where it being blocked wouldn't be an issue.

Basicly, keep the opening of the port inside of the box as far away from the sub as possible. Thats a start. The firing direction in a truck like that isnt going to make a huge differance... aim it under the seat would be fine.
