Ok....just had a dumba-- attack and something doesn't look right, so here's a really stupid question:

I have 2 amps, a 4ch and the other a 2ch bridged for the sub. I patch the RCAs from the 4ch output to the 2ch, yes?

Ok, now.....this is the first head unit I've ever had with sub-out controls, so do I go directly from the sub out to the 2ch - bypassing the 4ch altogether?

Yes, that's right. And don't forget to reset your gain after you connect the sub amp directly to the HU.

Stupid question #2: is there a science to setting the gains on the amps? Or is it just by ear?

It's not a dumb question. It's better to ask now than to mess something up and feel stupid about that. Most people just set gains by ear, while others use a multimeter or an oscilliscope. However it's done, when the gain controls are set properly, they yield the best signal to noise ratio you can get with the equipment.

If you do a search in here on gain setting, you'll run across plenty of threads to get you started.
