I have an Alpine CDA-7863 that Im going to be hooking up. I need to know if I should hook the ground wire up to the car harness or to a screw behind the dash.

use the harness, use a metra kit it makes things so much easyer.

you might get a better ground if you use the screw, and if it is in return your head unit will run more efficently and or bettter.

Hurry get me a steel hanger, elec tape, zip ties, a monkey and a snorgle. trust me i've ran wires with less

Somone mind clearing this one up..Because I've heard both..Is this just a split decision or what?

Depending on the current draw of the headunit and whatever else is sharing the same ground circuit as the factory wire. Without knowing the particular insights of that Alpine model, if it one of the units that recommends a 10 gauge power line to the battery, I would be running a new ground and not use the one built into the harness. The size of the power and ground wire on the headunit usually tells you what to do.

Is there (or will there be) an amp involved? If so, I'd definitely establish a new clean ground where everything can be grounded together.

it's easy to say run a new ground..of the decks i installed i've always just used the one that's in the wiring harness, never had a problem, and i've got a couple amps in my car and still no problems, but looks at some of the newer cars(pontiac grand prix wide track for example) it's plastic behind the cd player.. you figure that out :) like what was said in a earyler post, unless your running a 10 guage power wire for your cd player i wouldn't worry about it...

just boulderguy...i'm a little confused with your post...makeing a new clean ground where everything can be ground together...i understand a new clean ground...this this is a cd player, did you mean just new grounds for everything in what ever spot you decided to put them or did you actually mean to connect all the grounds to one clean location?

I meant that if he's got an amp or will have one in the future he's going to want to ground them all in the same spot to avoid the dreaded alternator noise - might as well do it now.

It is one of the Alpine radios with the choke coil on the battery lead that you must connect directly to the battery.
