I have this model Alpine that I bought around the end of 2003. I know that Alpine states that players after 2004 work with the ipod adapter. I was just wondering if anyone knows if this model will work with the adapter, or has at least tried it. I was gonna buy one and try it out (could always return it), but figured I would check here first.

On another note, is anyone using the interface with their Alpine units? Is it worth it? Or does the fm transmitter work ok? Kinda concered about the transmitter, b/c it seems that it would still be aggravating to play certain songs and may not provide a good, clear sound.

Way better then ANY FM modulator. I've used the 420i on 2004 and 2005 decks and it works fine. Rumor at one time was it will work on any 9000 series head units, yours included. Haven't tried on your deck yet but as you said you can always bring it back.

I installed the kca-420i into my girlfriends car which has a 9815 and it worked.  You can use the ipod interface with any ai-net compatible decks, however on the older ones like the 9811, 9813, and 9815 you do lose a little control, they werent really designed to work with the interface like the newer ones are.  So yes it will work and yes it is much better sound than an fm transmitter.

What controls are lost?  Does everything still come through on the radio display?

Yeah everything does come through the display still.  There arent as many lines on the older ones so its not as nice of a display but its still there.  I dont know that any controls are fully lost, basically my only problem with it has been that the controls arent as advanced, like when you are scrolling through tracks and folders its not nearly as organized.  The girlfriend uses it every day with relative ease so it cant be too bad.
