I would like to connect to the AUX of the head unit so I can connect an MP3 player via RCA jacks of a 2004 Mecury Mountaineer.  The radio is the premium radio double DIN with 6 disk CD.  I do not have the factory DVD or the external CD changer.  I know that there are units like I think the AUXbox and others but they seem a little expensive to me around $60-$100.  I would like to know if there is a way to connect the back of the radio.  I know that their are inputs for the AUX like L+, L-, R+,R- but from what I have not been able to find out if you can just connect to these inputs without anything else needed.

Is there a way of doing this without spending a lot of money?  I do not want to use a FM modulator or a unit that connects in-between the antenna and HU.  Any help would be appreciated.  Yes, I have done a great deal of searching but have not been able to find

No, you will have to use an AUX in interface. The radio needs to see digital communication with the aux device in order for the radio to keep the port open.

Yeah, if you are an engineer with all the right equipment to reverse engineer the interface after capturing the digital code that the factory DVD player would send to the radio. Companies spend thousand of dollars and many many hours developing these interfaces for us to have.
