Hi guys,

I have a 96 Jetta with factory premium sound.  I want to install an aftermarket am/fm/cd head unit and I'm wondering if it's possible to utilize the factory amp so the system will sound the same.  IF so, what do I need to look for in the head unit as far as outputs or will I need a line level convertor from the head unit's speaker outputs?  Or would it be easier to install an aftermarket amp and tie it to the factory speakers?

Thanks in advance!

Jake

Metra makes a nice amp integration harness and the only thing you need to make sure of is that the HU you install has 4 pre-outs (front & rear)

Should be a Metra 70-1784 harness. I asked about the Monsoon because it like most amplfied VW systems is speaker level input. The thing about the monsoon is that it's a current sensing turn on, so it doesn't need a remote turn on lead.

Yes, but VW used this name for their amplified system in the late 90s and early 00s. Not the same system, I just think both companies feel in love with the name!

Actually... there is Monsoon audio company. Used to be at www.monsoonpower.com... but appears to be busted. They also do home and PC audio.
AFAIK, Monsoon didn't show up in VW's until 1999.5 when they went to the MKIV body style. You could get BOSE in some GLX VR6's. The premium sound he is probably referring to is the deck itself.... probably a Premium 4 unit (Clarion). Mine had Premium6 on it... nothing premium about it. No amp hiding anywhere.
