What is the proper way to install Ring Terminals on 4 or 8 ga wire?

It depends.  If it's a solderless connector, crimp it.  You'll need either a crimper designed for that large size wire (these are often hydraulic) or use some cave-man technology to hammer it crimped.  If it's not a solderless connector, solder it.  Indeed, I usually do both.

is there a way to tell?

I have Phoniex and Monstor ones here, they look the same - they have little rings cut on the inside....

No idea.  Be safe: solder them.
