I have a 1998 Ford Ranger the readout on the radio quit working but the radio works fine and the readout will come on once in a while.  The radio also has cd, cassette, AM, FM Stereo. what could be wrong?

The deck is shot. yoour better off to get an aftermarket. i have had a few rangers and windstars come into the shop with that same problem. the customers all wanted the fact deck back though so i was not able to take it apart and find out what was wrong with it.

You won't hurt anything by opening it to take a look.  It's not like the unit's under warranty or anything.  You may simply have a solder joint that's severed.

If you decide it's something you don't want to mess with, I do have a fully functional replacement collecting dust here.  I bought it on ebay maybe a year or so ago for my dad's Crown Vic.  He swore the cd/cass unit was an option.  It ended up not fitting because of the a/c ductwork behind the radio, but I did plug it in to ensure everything was working.  You can have it cheap if you want it.  Make an offer if you're interested.

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.
