Is that a good idea or not?  Will it cause bad sound or will it not matter?

That's my opinion. Take it, leave it, or correct me.

It depends.  In some cases it can cause problems, in some cases it can solve problems.  It depends on the installation.

No, you don't NEED it.  In fact I recommend always starting off with the exact same Xover points and slopes between speaker elements as that is the ideal setup.  In some cases, an overlap may help the sound, but it is not "needed"

If I were to overlap slightly would that cause any problems and what would those problems be?

"Overlapping" crossover points can cause either a hump (increased SPL) or a dip (decreased SPL) in the crossover overlap area.  Both of these could be either a good thing or a bad thing, depending on the installation.  You'll have to trust your ears or use an RTA to tweak it in properly.
