When I installed professionally, we'd call the dealer on behalf of our customers and give them the model number and serial number of the radio as well as the vehicle and anything else they might ask.  Sometimes they'd give us a code, and sometimes they wouldn't- they'd tell us to send the customer to them.

I believe the newer GM radios come coded to the VIN, so if you try to swap vehicles it won't work without having the dealer program it in with their equipment- something to keep in mind.

My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.
