I'm installing a 12"W6 subwoofer and I would like to know whether to run the coils in parallel which will give me a 3 ohm load or run the coils in series which will give me a 12 ohm load. I'm running a JL e1400D amplifier. Any help greatly appreciated.

Amp specs:

@12.5V

240W RMS x 1 @ 4ohm

400W RMS x 2 @ 2ohm

@14.5V

300W RMS x 1 @ 4ohm

500W RMS x 2 @ 2ohm

Sub Specs:

10.8ohm (DC in series)

dual 6ohm (nominal impedance)

300W continuous power

Wiring in parallel at 3 ohms looks like a good matchup. The sub would get a nominal 320 watts, but that's at the highest level of output and so is not far enough off the sub specifications for power handling to be concerned with. Contrarily, loading the amp at 12 ohms would yield 90 watts and might not be enough power. But in this case, you can try both ways.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.
