Several technical questions about modifying an AudioControl Three.1 in-dash EQ:

Currently using an AC Three.1 as a pre-amp in my car system, I'd like to move the volume control away from the unit to another spot on the center console - about 3' away. Is this possible without sonic degradation, the degradation coming from the extension wiring? If no significant degradation, where can I source a quality volume knob so I don't have to cut up the existing one?  Just get a basic pot from RadioShack, or is there something specific I should look for?

I also have 3 different sources I'm using, all line-level. I'd like to situate a source selector on the center console close to the new volume knob, about 2' of line-level extension. Is this going to create significant sonic degradation? If not, where can I source this type of switch - basically a small rotary or other selector, 3-position, like what you'd find on the front of a home pre-amp?  Is there anything in particular I should look for - ohms, voltage, current handling etc?  Is one as good as another or are there big glaring differences?  This is ultimately a SQ system that I'm trying to adapt for maximum ease-of-use (i.e.laziness).

I've emailed AC about this but don't expect an answer in the next fiscal year...

thanks in advance for the wisdom.

I'm sure you could do what you're suggesting, but this comment:

makes me say don't.  If you want an SQ system, then the last thing you want to do is add low-quality components like external pots for volume control that are spliced into an existing circuit board.  Get an external line-level control if that's what you think you need and use it upstream of the EQ.  You may be able to find one that has multiple-source switching built-in.

I'll qualify my statement a bit more - a SQ system but not a competition systtem.  I've got picky ears & staging, impact, vocals etc are important to me but I'd give up a bit in the name of convenience.  Bear in mind that the primary source is an iPod, so somewhat flawed to begin with (hence the use of an EQ).  Maybe more accurate to say an SQ system based on MP3's.  Oxymoron?

Where could I look for a quality multiple source line-level control for use upstream of the EQ - are we talking radio shack or are there specialty houses that will have better stuff?

Level control

Source selector

These are just a couple of suggestions.  I'm certain there are many other devices available.

Perfect, exactly what I needed. Now watch me screw up a perfectly good sound system...
