equalizer?

Well I recently bought some new subs and a kicker 600.1 amp then I bought a kicker 325.4 amp and some infinity reference 5010cs components then to round it off I bought a kicker kx3 crossover now my question is should I add a 9 band eq or for fine tuning the sound from the driver seat or would it be a useless overkill. Also I noticed that in dash eq's only have one set of inputs that seperate to front and rear is this how head units do it (basically) or would I be missing the ability to truely fade the system or hear the music as it's supposed to be hear? Thanks in advace

It comes down to personal preference. Years ago, I had a 10 band EQ under the Alpine in my old Mustang. While it seemed to present a world of possibilities at first, it soon became an excersice in nit-picking for me. These days, I take a much more simple approach. Nice deck, quality components and subs, and clean powerful amps. If the gear is up to the job, the rest will fall into place.

Think of a big Home Theatre system like we put in our living rooms. My HT's brain has very little EQ control, yet is sounds monstrous at volume...clean and powerful. Why? Quality speakers and subs combined with plenty of power to feed it all.

I would say give it a shot if you can afford it. You may like it alot. You may not. Either way, you learned somehing valuable from it.

First I have some questions for you. Once answered they will lead me to the proper conclusion for you. (even though I already know the answer). Post the balance of the system for us as well and include the vehicle you have.

(1) why did you buy the crossover?

(2) why do you think you need an EQ?

(3) are you after good sound?

• Pioneer DEH 7700MP HU
• Kicker KX3 Crossover
• Kicker 600.1 pushing two MTX Thunder 7500's at 2 ohms
• Kicker 350.4 pushing two sets of Infinity 5010cs components

I bought the crossover mainly because I want to be able to have the controls in one place where I can set them and they won't be messed with. The amps have built in crossovers but they are very easy to move and could be moved by groceries, kids and like that so I want a little more accurate control and the security of knowing they won't be messed with.

I thought of buying an eq so that I can change the system for the type of music I am listening too. I know everyone says "I listen to everything" but I am one of the few that do. For instance the cd currently in my car has a healthy mix of rap, soul, classical, jazz, bluegrass, country, big band, ska, punk, underground industrial, and a little speed metal thrown in for good measure. I was thinking that and eq could possibly give me the ability to tune my system for each type of music the way I want to hear it and to adjust for my mood (Music is a very big part of my life).

I do hope to do some local comps but I have yet to compete so I'm starting slow, I do want the best possible sound from my truck but when I'm in a mood to rattle the windows I want a system that can do it. The most important thing above all else whether it be judge or the cute chick that works at the gas station is that the music is presented in a way that I can lean back, crank it up and let it flow over me while I drive down the highway on the way to work in the morning.
