the deck in my car was draining my battery because i had it hooked up straight to it. i put a switch on it and now it doesn't keep any settings. it is a newer sony deck, is it supost to reset or should it keep the settings for a limited time?

You don't have the constant power hooked up so no, it won't retain any settings.  If the deck is draining your battery, it is defective - or you have a very weak, old battery.

You only need to have the switch on the red wire of your head unit. Leave the yellow wire connected all the time. Your head unit may even have a switch on the top of the unit for vehicles without a switched 12 volt lead. With this switch in the proper position the unit will completely power down when you turn it off just as it would if you had killed power to the accessory lead via the ignition switch.
