I am curious to know from all you experienced hands what of the redundant controls you use setting up your systems, for instance when your head unit has a adjustable low pass filter with a 24db slope do you use that and than set the amp at full range or low pass ? If you use low pass would you set it @ 120hz or what? I don't believe there is a right or a wrong way but just wanted to know because when i tune my customers systems it seems easier using the head unit but when the installer has the amp set at LP and the fq set @ 60hz! The head units x/o is about as useless as tits on a nun..anyway i would be curious to know because there seems to be a lot of what i call "audio literate" people in here... I agree with you in general. If the HU is good quality and has good crossovers built into it, then ether set the sub amp to full range or set it to a much higher low-pass setting (or lower in the case of high-pass filter) than the setting in the HU. Just makes it easier to fine tune. OTOH if the amp contains much better quality crossover than the HU, I'll use it instead.

Totally agree with using the better quality crossover, but for novice do-it-yourselfers such as myself, how do you know which is the "better" crossover...for example, MTX Thunder Amp crossover vs. Pioneer DEHP80MP HU crossover? Depending on the time of day, music, mood, etc. I find myself leaning towards one or the other as to which is sounding better. Hypothetical conclusion drawn: both crossovers about equal on the quality scale. Which crossover do i use? -- posted image.
