I have a clarion DXZ555MP head unit that I want to hook up an amp for a pair of subs. It looks like the 2 pair of preouts are more for using a four channel amp for the regular speakers and not for a sub. I also don't think that I will be able to have direct control over the subs like I would with a dedicated sub-preout. Does anyone have any experience with out this sounds and works? Should I bite the bullet and buy a new head unit with a dedicated sub-preout?
thanks,
Scott

If it doesn't have a sub out, you could use either front or rear.  You'll use the crossover on your amp so that's not really an issue.  If you want control over sub level, consider a knob mounted up front that goes inline on the rca's ( http://www.pac-audio.com/products/productsCatagory.asp?mmSearch=Amplifier%20Level%20Controllers).  If you're satisfied with your current headunit, this should work fine.  Otherwise, you could look at this as an opportunity to upgrade.
My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

thanks for the info, I think I will probably see how it sounds before I decide if I get that control knob because I like my headunit, but I definitely wish it had a sub out.
