Hello,
I have a 1997 Bonneville and the steering wheel volume controls seem to work on their own these days. The volume will, at any given time, spike all the way up or turn all the way down and I never know when this will happen. The dealership says that I need a new switch under the volume control. The switch is $140 + labor which includes removing and resetting the airbag.
What I would like to know is, can I fix this myself? If not, how can I disable the volume control on the steering wheel? It is not worth $200-$250 to fix.
Thank you.

If the controls are somewhat thriangular in shape, you can use a hooked tool to pull it out of the steering wheel and just unplug it.
