In my truck I have 4 of Boston's RC820 component speakers --- 1 in each door....These consist of a 5X7 drop in woofer and a seperate tweeter...... The tweeter is Boston’s exclusive 1-inch Kortec soft dome Neo3r Ambient Tweeter System.    Now --- I'm happy with the mid-bass from the Boston Woofer.....it could be better but it's not bad......I'm really not happy with the tweets and X-over, so Would upgrading to some Focal TN52 tweets or something else be worthwhile?

I was going to go with a 6.5" component system but I can't afford a 6.5" component system and a custom 4 door install now so I thought some Very good Tweets would help.... I have a JL 450/4 pushing all 4......

Is this a good idea?  Running Boston woofers with Focal tweets (or another brand)?  Or should I scrap the idea and keep my inadequate sounding Bostons?

Thanks

What is it exactly you don't like about the Boston tweeters?  Maybe I can recommend a replacement for you but I need to know what you think you're missing first.

Dyohn -- Thanks for the help.......

Well, the tweets that came with the Bostons aren't clear at high volumes.... Kind of muddy; not crisp & clean....

Now --- I'm pretty happy with the mid-bass from the 5X7 woofers......Could I do better with some 6.5" comps?  Sure ---- but then there is the money thing plus a custom install.......

So---- I was looking for an upgraded X-over to direct the frequencies to the Boston woofer and a much better tweeter ---- I don't think the boston X-over is very good.....

What about CDT?  Or someone better with a x-over and tweets.

tj

"not clear at high volume" usually indicates you are over driving your head unit or amplifier and something is clipping.  It could be the tweeters reaching their excursion limits, but as long as you are not overpowering them that should not be a problem, and if you were forcing them to their mechanical limits they probably would have fried by now.  So the first thing to check is your HU performance and your amplifier output to see if you are clipping anything.

I will guess that you may like metal dome tweeters more than soft domes if what you want are more piercing highs.  CDT makes some really decent tweets, but the Focal TN52 you mention are excellent sounding tweets that are much better than anything from CDT.  These are part of their K2 series.  They do need to be crossed over fairly high, however, so you would probably need to also find the Focal K2 crossovers and hope the BA woofers can keep up.  Mixing and matching like this is, by the way, a questionable thing to do and usually ends up sounding like chrome-plated ass.  Good luck!

Although your description of the tweeter problem doesn't lead me to think location, it would be better just to have all the info, where are they mounted in conjunction to the mids and in the car in general?
