Tweeter sound in component set

I tore the door panels apart today messing around with the component set trying to figure out where my HIGHS are. Can someone tell me when the tweeter part of component set should sound like when I unhook the woofer? Sounds like a dumb question but when I disconnect the speaker wire from the crossover that goes to my woofer the sound from the tweeter is horrible. Scratchy and really quiet. I verified the other side sounds the same. I am new to component sets but I have to believe that little tweater should be louder than a whisper. I also tried to hook the tweeter up to the amp directly (very low setting) and the sound is horrible. Aren't these tweeters just little speakers or am I missing something totally?? I have the SPX-177R Alpine set driving by a Alpine MRV-F450 amp.

Sounds to me like you've blown your tweeters.  Have an experienced friend give it a listen.My ex once told me I have a perfect face for radio.

Uh, no, that doesn't happen at all unless you remove the crossover.

I am glad you straighten that out. I was a little puzzled by how that could be the case because this setup could be made to just run the tweeter if I wanted too. Blown? Both of them? I hooked up a small 4" speaker to the speaker wires where the tweeter went and it too seemed underpowered... Or at least it seems like it. The way this tweeter sounds I doubt I could hear it from 10 feet away at 50% power... That just does not seem right to me. I wish I had more experience with component sets and I would know. My system sounds great I just have to crank up my treble to get my highs.... I am believer that your system should sound pretty darn good when your HU is flat.

There is a slight chance that both tweeter outputs on both of your crossovers are f-ed. More likely than not though, your tweeters are blown. "People with mullets live 40% longer"   - Ricky Bobby

Thanks DYohn, that was the info I was looking for. I am using the cross overs. In my second post in that thread I posted my system and mentioned this. The little tweeter would not survive very long if I didn't. The post about my hollow sound is specifically at volume level 23 with the BBE setting on.
