antenna problems

I recently had my antenna replaced in my 1988 olds cutlass supreme classic it has the antenna that when off goes down. well since i have had the antenna replaced my reception has just gone to nuthing its all fuzz and and static. now this antenna is a bit shorter but not that much i dont see it making that much of a diffrence but not sure does anyone have any ideas?... the antenna wire is connected to the head unit properly other than that i havent checked anything... any help on this subject would be greatly apreciated

If the incorrect antenna connectors were used, you could experience this problem. Use a ohm meter and test the antenna leads. Unplug the antenna lead from the radio. With the ignition off place one of the meters probes to a good chassis ground and the other probe to the outer or shield connection of the antenna lead tip at the radio. You should get a reading of less than 0.5 ohms. Next take the probe off the shield contact of the antenna lead tip and place it on the center conductor of the antenna lead. With the other probe still grounded, you should get infinite resistance or no connection. Last. Measure the resistance from the center conductor of the antenna lead to the tip of the antenna mast. You should get a reading of less than 0.5 ohms. If the antenna is a power antenna, you should also check the resistance from the lead tip at the radio to each section of the retractable mast. The reading should be less than 0.5 ohms. I am betting you will find that someone hasn't used the proper connector somewhere to replace the old antenna with a new one. It would be worse if they cut and spliced the old and new antenna cables.sparky
