I would have to say that I highly doubt you fried his ecu. How exactly did you bypass his amp? Did you use a metra harness or other aftermarket harness?

well, assuming the install was done correctly, i don't see any way posable to fry an ecu just buy doing a simple amp bypass in a mustang. all the shade tree work sounds like the problem. what the heck is home electrical wire in the car for? sounds like a coincidence that he wants you to pay for.

I dont know what it is w/ people and home electrical wire!!! I did a car today,91 ford ranger for a deck, had to do a reverse harness on it too.To make a long story short, the owners dad had disconnected the factory speaker wire and ran some copper strand home electrial wire from behind the radio, through the firewall, across the engine bay and into the door jams for speaker wire...lol this stuff was like 10g. All cuz the "bigger the wire the better" LOL

First off, I would really question the fact that the customer brought you a burned out ECU with the exact location of a burned out diode while at the same time, the customer would not know how to install a simple HU in an 1989 Mustang ?? Sound a bit fishy to me IMO.
Secondly, the stereo system in a Ford does not pass through the ECU at all. On the OEM stereo system, there is nothing that is controlled through the ECU therefore removing the HU/bypassing the amp and installing an aftermarket HU will do nothing to the ECU. I did an install on a 1988 Mustnag last week where the customer had an existing Panasonic system in there with a poor prior installation and it still did nothing to the ECU.

I truly believe that the customer is trying to get a free ride out of this from you.

I have been installing for a business for 2 years, I own an 89' mustang 5.0 I took the factory amp out all together I have not had any problems with it. I think he's just trying to get somebody to fix his problems, without it coming out of his pocket.

Try to be as tackful as possible, I know it will be hard. Explain that is not possible for the this to have occured by simply installing a cd player. Tell him your sorry he's having  problems with his ecu but it is not as a result of your installation. I would think that the owners of the business should stand behind your work.  If they through out the o so common I'll sue ya, let em. As soon as you explain the situation to a judge or magistrate they will dismiss it. I can't emphasize enough on mainting your cool though, nothing good will result if you don't. I emphasize this because I have a temper problem which makes problems worse every time guaranteed. Good luck, we have all been there atleast once, whether your right or wrong it sucks.......
