I have 2 alpine type R 12's ran by a directed 1100D amp. they are in a tiny sealed box, will they sound better in a bigger ported box? I want bass thats deep with long notes ( don't know if thats a good way to put it) i only listen to rap so boxes for that kinda music will benifit more, i have limited trunk space as this is in a 02 GT Mustang Coupe. Do they sell pre-made boxes that are good?

If you listen to rap all the time, you'll be happier w/ a ported enclosure. You'll get a few more db's. Build the boxes on the big end - but within the spec's that Alpine dictates. Since we're talkin' 'bout a Mustang ... that's gonna be kinda tough ... small trunk opening.

Pre-fabbed enclosures are built to "avarage specs" ... a box built to spec for your speakers will sound better ... generally. Every now-n-then, you'll run across a pre-fabbed box that is a perfect match for a given speaker/amp combo.

HAHA!! What's the matter, man? Do I stink or something?? LOL!!! Building a box to spec is the quickest way to get things rolling. If you have time & materials to play around with, by all means, experiment with enclosure sizing. But it's generally best to go by what the manufacturers suggest.

yep, generally speaking the bigger the box (properly tuned of course) is always better. you should try getting a hold of a box building program that can show you a response curve on an enclosure based on internal volume and the particular woofer's specifications. keep in mind porting an enclosure isn't just cutting a hole in the box and shoving a port in it. back in the day (which was a wednesday - i don't know if you know that but anyway) we used a very basic JBL program that once your woofer's specs were entered it would show you response curves for sealed, ported, and bandpass. ported was always louder and depending on what tuning frequency you chose would tell you how long to make the port. i would look around for a similar program and considering how difficult it is going to be to get a single 2 12" box into the back end of a mustang i would personally measure twice and cut once. good luck and hope this helps.

to get my low bass i take the max recomended enclosure space then take the displacement of the sub times 4and add it...

for say min box1.2 cubic max box 2.0 sub displacement .1 then.1 times 4 you hva e a 2.4^3 box its not alot bigger bt it seems to sound good for lower bass

hey i didnt make that up the owner of a local audio shop a friend of my fathers told me that i didnt belive him i thought he was just making up crap but when we did it it sounded good for some reason..

cutlass013, that's a made-up rule of thumb that means absolutely nothing. The fact is, boxes larger than the largest "manufacturer's suggested size" usually sound better. It's all about marketing your product...people who want subwoofers usually don't have enough space for the best enclosures.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

maybe i'm just getting old but if you have 2 12"s then it should sound like 2 12"s. i like to see impressive rather than loud. at my last shop when i was learning to build boxes and what have you i built a 2 8" box and put 2 Cerwin Vega baby strokers in my Honda del Sol (back before i knew German was better lol) and it sounded like 2 12"s. but what do i know i don't even have subs anymore New box for Rap, Ported or sealed? -- posted image.

. it takes up room i could be using for groceries. anyway, it is all about what you are going for but in my old man opinion i like impressive (ie making equipment do more than what is supposed to do without damaging or overloading it) rather than just loud. good luck and hope this helps.

In my opinion, the I have 2 8's that sound like 2 12's is pretty funny. Install 2 8's in the correct enclosure and install 2 12's in its correct enclosure, both in the same car, I bet you will tell the difference. Since not only correct enclosre size, but each cars acoustics effect sound, this statement should be re stated " I have 2 8's that sound like 2 12's in my friends car"

OK who will build me a box???? i live in southern california and the shops out here are ALL crooks, they just want my money and build it their way (sealed) quick94gt@sbcglobal.net is my email if anybody is interested in building it, i will even have it shipped if i have to.
