Installed a starmate in a 99 grand am today. Heres the conditions: engine off static at low volume, initally it was wired or spliced into the radio harnes for switched power and ground. i moved to the ignition harness for power and to the body for a ground no dice. I grabbed power back on the radio side to see if it was just the ground nope still static. It is fm modulated so I tried every freq. from 88.1 all the way up one at a time still static. I even tried running directly to the battery for power/ground still had static....I am thinking bad unit but I am looking for any ideas in other things to try. I have not seen this problem with these..

HAve u tried swapping the modulator? Or are you using the buit in wireless mod?

I am slow in the head today so please bare with me. What is meant by wired modualtion? Been a crazy busy week.....................

That's the part you'd need. It plugs into the FM out of the starmate. Then plugs into the vehicle's antenna. Changes the built in wireless fm modulator into a hardwired one.

Yes sir that is the one I'm talking about. You're not changing the frequency on the relay. The relay is just changing the wireless mod to a wired one. The frequency is still changed via the starmate's menu.
