Hey,I'm looking for some inexpensive ways to improve the sound of my audio system in my car. I have the aftermarket speakers and a nice head unit and I'm about to put one 10" sub in... I want my car to sound good I'm just not willing to dump tons of money into it... any suggestions?

You must be willing to dump enough money into it to make it sound good. Smart shopping, that's about all there is to it. And you will need sound damping (Dynamat, et al.) when you install a subwoofer.

Build the box so that it performs well in the worst case scenario and, in return, it will reward you at all times.

so basically you are asking to live in a mansion and not pay for it? Cant be done unless you rob an audio store (im not suggesting you actually do that). good sounding cars cost money. plain and simple. what is your current budget?

It can be done, but you have to be smart, and do your research. There are many car audio companies that are over hyped, as well as a few that are under rated. For example - Blaupunkt makes some great speakers, although they are some of the cheapest you can find. Spend some time comparing and contrasting products before you buy. Consider weather the budget you're working with can satisfy your needs, or if you would rather wait and get something better.

"bolt on's" generally will not make your system sound better. You need to design your system before you build it.

Sound deadening would be the place I would start. You can have all of the best equipment installed, if you can't keep out road noise and keep in all the sound, its entirely useless. Its time consuming to install it, but you'll be happy you did it....

I willing to spend a few hundred dollars I just don't have the time os money for thousands of dollars of equiptment

cost really depends on which brand you choose, if you decide to sound deaden. You can use ice and water shield that is used for roofing. It is inexspensive and does a decent job. I have used it with decent results, I will say on vertical surfaces and truck lids are out though. It does not seem to stay on these surfaces when it gets hot out. My personal preferred choice would be hushmat, very easy to apply, and is very, very sticky stuff. They make several different size kits available, price depends on the size of what you need.

- Here is a thread about some incredibly cheap sound deadening. It was $70 for 180sq ft. You might PM sprawl85 and see how that's working out for him now that he's had it a while.

Get an amplifier for your aftermarket speakers and/or sound deaden your car. This will help a lot.

Also, get someone to gainset the system properly (not by ear)
