Installing a Pioneer dehp47dh head unit in a grand am. I want the head unit to dim with the dash lights. Problem is i only have an illumination wire off the head unit but a dimm and illimination wire off the harness. My question is if i hook up the dimm will it work as i want it to? Leaving the illumination wire disconnected or do you hook them both together?

you want to connect the illumination wire from the head unit to the illumination wire on the harness. Don't use the dimm wire at all, and don't hook them together.
The illumination wire should show 12+ volts only when you turn the healdights or parking lights on.
It's not possible to have the pioneer dim variably like the stock one does, it only has two levels of brightness....full, and dim when you turn the head lights on.

Thank you. Seems to be a lot of people out there with the same question. Maybe Pioneer should adress this in the installation manual.

The reason they probably don't address this in the manual is because any qualified installer will know the difference..and the aftermarket harnesses are color coded.

But we all start somewhere and learn as we go.

Basically the dimmer wire is for dimming..the ill lights the backlights since most factory deck use a seperate wire for each function.

since most aftermarket decks that even have an illumination wire only use one..it is assumed to connect to the illimination wire. If the deck had a specific wire for dimer, it would be labled as such.
