hey guys,

i have the avn5495 and am having trouble using the memory stick function to listen to music. First, I bought a 128mb DUO memory stick, but when i put it into my USB read/writer, the formatting utility displays "Memory Stick PRO" I know avn5495 does not allow the use of pro. In addition, I cannot format this card using the formatting utility. I also have a 32 mb DUO memory stick from my dad's camera that looks exactly like the 128mb, but that card can be formatted and the formatting utility doesnt say "PRO".  also, when i insert the card int othe unit, the message "no music data" comes up. all music has been converted to atrac3.  any suggestions on what i can be doing wrong?

thanks in advance.

Duo CAN be Pro, but it should be indicated on the card in some fashion. If it doesn't actually SAY it's Pro, then it most likely isn't.
Format the stick in the deck, FIRST. When you insert it into the deck, using the menus in the deck, (format the card in the deck, not with Windows) the deck SHOULD format it for it's specific needs.
I know that with the Duo cards, you should have an adpater, and in the side of the adapter is a TINY switch to lock it, and prevent writing to it, and this includes formatting. Also, don't install ANY software (if you did already, GET RID OF IT) that might have come with the memory stick, just use a standard reader, and use Windows to format it - it'll work without the software, trust me... Quick formats will also work just fine. After any Windows formatting, you will have to re-format it in the deck, so it builds the directory structure necessary. If you decide to format in Windows, select FAT or FAT16 for the formatting, your deck won't recognize FAT32 or NTFS.
Try these steps, and let me know...
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."

hey thanks for the quick reply. the problem is that the unit does not have the capability to format the card. also, i tried using Windows to format it, but the unit still does not detect it, which is funny because i can use it in a Sony camera, where it works fine. also, i tried using another 32 mb DUO card, which when put into the computer does not come up as being "PRO", that will work in the unit.  What do you think the problem is? Thanks

What is the EXACT manufacturer and model number of the Duo card you are using? Let me do a little bit of research from THAT end, and see where that leads us.
As far as the deck is concerned, I had to dig DEEP in my manual to locate the formatting procedure, but the deck should be able to do it. It would seem a bit odd for it to not be able to.

Can you link me to the manual? I was unable to locate it on the Eclipse website...
