2001 Chevy Tahoe Head Unit Removal

I have a friend that asked me to install some type of XM radio FM modulator on his Tahoe.. Before I have him come over I just wanted to see how the head unit comes out. Does it need a special tool? Take long? Thanks!

NO special tools, should take you 5 minutes to remove. Remove the outer trim bezel it, tilt steering wheel down put shifter in L1 and remove trim panel. should be 3 7mm screws holding it in.

Tell your friend you need a torch to remove it, I love using that one haha!!!

or tell him that the front seats need to be removed. you always get weird looks on that one.

Actually the radio isn't screwed in. Use the tilt lever to lower the steering column to the lowest position and pull the trim panel that surrounds the radio, climate controls, gauges and air outlet ducts rearwards to release all the clips. Gently squeeze the portion above the steering wheel down to clear the dash above the gauges as you pull it rearwards and up. The radio has a slider bracket on either side of it. Squeeze each one while pulling the radio out. They are spring loaded. It takes only seconds to get these radios out.    sparky

You will need a special installation kit for this vehicle. Metra and Scosche both have one for this truck.Jeff

A special kit to install the SIRIUS fm direct adapter?? I thought it just plugged into where the antenna went and then the antenna plugged into it?

You may need  antenna adapters for that. Gm has the small plug and the sirius direct fedd fm mod.'s have the big plug input. They make kits that will cover the swap, metra or scoshe.
