1995 buick lesabre wiring

Hello all,

As this is my first post I feel a bit of introduction is in order, I'm a 26 year old chef, but I've pursued mobile electronics as a hobby since I put my first sound system in my first car when I was 16.  In other words, I am by no means a professional as many of you on this forum are and could probably learn alot here, I'm glad I found this forum.

Down to business, my current project is a co-workers 1995 Buick LeSabre, which is a model I'm unfamiliar with.  He tried to install a new head unit himself and unwittingly clipped the factory harness leaving me with a mess of wires to sort out.  I looked up a wiring diagram for his car and got almost everything labeled (there's a few wires I'm not sure about, possibly power antenna or factory amp) and connected his head unit wires to the respective car wires.

The switched 12V is yellow but there were 2 yellow wires, so after trying the first and nothing, I tried the second and got nothing as well.  After a while it dawned on me to check the fuse and sure enough his 10A radio fuse was blown, so after replacing that and using a DMM I found the right one.  We hooked the head unit up and gave it a test drive and it turns on, and appears to be playing a CD, however I'm getting no sound out.

Bottom line my question is, does a 95 lesabre have a factory amp? if so how do I determine which wire is the power lead for that? I read volt's guide on determining which wire is which, very good guide I might add, but I'm not sure that it said how to find the factory amp lead.  Sorry if this is a duplicate post but I searched the forums for almost an hour and turned up nothing.  My gut feeling here due to the extra wires, and the fact that I doubt all 4 of his speakers are blown, is that there is in fact a factory amp.

If it makes a difference, the head unit he is installing is XM capable(I forget the model off the top of my head), though he does not have XM.  At this point there is no aftermarket amp or subs, though we plan to install those later, and the interior speakers are all factory, not aftermarket.

Any help that you can give me on this would be much appreciated. =)

Howdy.  trenchwarrior? Like working the cook line in a resturant?  They kinda look like trenches.

This probably isn't what you want to hear, but if I were you, I'd rewire the car speakers straight to the headunit.  I'd probably sound better than whatever Buick stuck in there 10 years ago.

Love it, and yeah on a friday or saturday night, it's definatly war in the trenches!

I kinda figured I may have to just rewire the speakers, I think I have a couple old kenwoods lying around which are probably better than his anyway.  I figure if we're going all out and wiring the amp anyway, we might as well run new speaker wire at the same time.  An addendum to the original post, altogether there are 3 yellow and 2 grey wires, I've determined one of the yellows is a rear speaker wire as it comes in the antenna bundle from the right side with the other rear speakers and the front right speakers, and I've determined which yellow is the switched with a DMM, but I still have an extra yellow from the left, and both greys are from the left, one of which is a front left speaker wire, the other one, is still an unknown.  I may have the wrong grey but I picked the one closest to the other front left speaker wire (tan I think) and compared the position coming out of the bundle to that of the original factory harness and I think I have the right one.  I didn't have time to check for continuity cause I had to go to work, but that's my next step once I get to work on it again.

Yea I hate to tell you to do it, but the onboard amp on the deck would probably sound at least as good as whatever Buick is using..

You also might have some issues with stock speaker impedence hooked straight to the aftermarket HU, so swapping in some old coaxials is a good idea.

I mean you certainly seem like you have a good grasp of your problem.
