surround repair

I finally got a good woofer. I just got a Boston Acoustics G5 10" with GTR passive radiator (had two Comp 10's). The surround has a slit in it from the inside to the outside. I figure I can temporarily fix it until I can save up for the replaceable cone/voice coil assembly. I would really like to try to fix it as it needs replacement anyways.

Could I stitch it with a needle and thread and then use some really flexable caulk or gasket sealant on the inside and outside of the surround? Maybe just caulk/gasket maker on the outside?

ANY input, except telling me I shouldn't, will help me get some ideas. Thanks

I know a kid that fixed a sony 10 like this.. really screwed up woofer.. but the end result was suprisingly listenable.

I like this idea.  Try Lowes or HomeDepot for neoprene sheets... you might even be able to get away with trimming a 25cent neoprene washer.

Use the above link to look at various adhesives you might use.  You really want to choose your adhesive carefully because it will have to move, alot, and very fast.  Obviously, not many adhesives do this after curing.

I did it this morning. The shop manager here at Carmax has owned a stereo shop before so I asked him his opinion. He said clear RTV silicone would do the trick. I told him this sucker moves 1.5" each way so i'd stitch it first to hold it together, the RTV is the thing that keeps air from leaking through.

I sewed it up (making sure it stayed 'aligned' the whole time, it's some thick foam) and used a layer of clear RTV silicone on the top and rear of the surround. I ensured it was able to move in full direction after every step. The surround bends and 'stretches' to its' full potential throughout both the inward and outward strokes. It actually looks like it'll move exactly like it should, it's just got a layer of clear RTV on it. I'm sure it'll add a little imbalance to the woofer, but it'll hold until I can get the SPS replacement.

I wouldn't use hot glue or super glue as they wont flex like they should. Someone tried to tell me to use JB Weld but I laughed at them. Thanks for your input, tubbs04. As for the rest, this was really easy and im sure it'll hold for a good long while.

I did ensure it moves correctly throughout the inward and outward stroke after sewing it and after 15 minutes of applying the RTV. When I awoke this afternoon (I work nights, did this this morning), it still moved freely in both ways - all the way, with no kinking or the sort.
