I am restoring a 87 4x4 chevy truck and i want to install a nice stereo system but i am not to knowledgeable about car audio. I listen to a mix of country, rock and rap. The truck still has all the factory speakers. It has (2) 3 1/2 speakers in the corners of the dash, a 4x8 not to sure about that in the center of the dash and (2) 4 x 10s in the rear of the cab. It is a standard cab so room is very limited but here is what i was i thinking about using. A pioneer (deh-p4900ib) head unit, a pioneer (gm-6300f) 4 channel amp with 60w at 4 ohms continuous power for the speakers. In the rear to replace the 4x10s I am thinking about pioneers 6x9 4 ohms 3-ways (ts-a6972r) or 6x9 4 ohms 2-way(ts-d681r) i dont know which to use. Replacing the 2ea 3 1/2 in the dash with 2ea infinitys 3 1/2 (3022cf) 2 ohm, wired in series to make them 4 ohms and connecting them to the amp, and replacing the center 4x8 or what ever is in there now, with either a 4x8 or 2 more infinitys wired in series, that would be my 4 channels. Then connecting the 3rd  rca from the head unit to a kenwood (ksc-sw1) 150w powered sub. I dont know if this will work or how it will sound, if someone could give me some advice about how it might sound or if it will work together or other components i should use please tell me. All your input will be greatly appreciated and help to get this rookie going in the right direction.  Thank you again  Kevin.

Kevin, slow down a bit here. Here are some suggestions that are based on years of background. First, eliminate the need for that center speaker, it does not need to be there and will more than likely hinder performance. CD player wise, upgrade to the Premiere version of this unit, the DEHP490IB as it includes the ipod cable and has a two year warranty.

If the goal is restoring the truck, is it also to keep it stock? If so, then keep to the 4x10" speakers (Eclipse makes a stellar set of both 3.5" and 4x10"). If not then sure you can upgrade to some 6x9's and either make or buy the proper mounting adaptor to make them fit in the lower corners. Do not get hung up on the number of "ways" in a speaker. If you are after increased tonal response and you do not mind a alteration to the vehicle, look at putting speakers into the lower part of the door, about 6" back from the front as there is a real nasty weld seam in that door that you do not want to cut into. It is easy to install speakers into these doors and make them look good at the same time. If this is a option, consider 6.75" component speakers.

For the sub, it's a reg cab pickup from what I can tell, choose the Pioneer or Earthquake shallow mount 10" or 12" speaker, one or two depending on the amount of bass response you seek. Bassworx makes a great prefab box built to the needs of the Pioneer sub so it will just drop right in. Look to a 5 channel amplfier to power the works, it saves on space (which is at a premium), saves on wire, saves on install time and also is one less amp to create noise in a system. Eclipse makes a darn fine 5channel amp in the XA5000, I have had reasonable success with the far cheaper Fusion 5 channel as well.

Thank you Forbidden for you expert advise.

So if I choose to use the 6.75 component speakers in the door will they take the place of the speakers in the dash and would I still use the 6 x 9s or the 4 x 10s in the rear. Since I have already spent a small fortune in restoring this truck, but using today technology, the bank account is getting pretty low. Have you ever had any luck or dealings with the earthquake (900w5) 5 channel amp or the pyle (plad618) 6 channel amp, these would same me a little bit of money. As for what kind of sound i am looking for, is clean loud music with some good hard bass, i dont want bass to over power the highs or to have all highs and no bass. I hope this is making sense to want i am looking for my mind is frazzled from all the options out there and tring to put this all together with out alot of knowledge on my part.  Thanks again for you help.                         Kevin

The components will indeed take place of the dash speakers (well somewhat). Lots of people like to mount the tweeter from the component speakers in the factory dash location. I have not had any experience with the Earthquake amplifier model you are mentioning, it should however be far ahead of the PYLE of crap though (so say no to Pyle). Look at eliminating the rear speakers for now (you can add them at a later date) and throw those saved $ towards that Eclipse XA5000 amplifier. Next go with the one sub route for now and the Pioneer shallow mount 12" would probably be the ideal subwoofer in this application (again, add the second sub later on).

Forbidden thanks again you very much for all your help.

I think that is the way that i will do things. I have 1 more question after the big 3 upgrade, and all the speakers and 1 10" sub and Eclipse XA5000 amp is installed will my factory charging system be enough, the alternator is a 94 amp?   Thanks for all the adivse and help.                              Kevin

Ideally a larger alternator should be found, however, unless you are going to be playing the system at full output all the time, it will suffice for now. Take the alternator issue a step at a time, add it if you need it.
