hello everyone,

im currently running a ppi precision power 2300 2ch amp hooked up to a jl audio 12w3v2-d2. the sub is a dvc wired in parallel to acheive a 4ohm load. the power specs of the amp are 300 wrms x 1 @ 4ohm bridged. so heres the problem. my current jl 12w3v2 has been having some problems and i replaced it with the same sub but its a dvc 4ohm. if this is wired in parallel, this will acheive a 2ohm load on the amp. i dont think the amp is 2ohm stable. it doesnt even give me any power specs at 2ohm bridged. would i damage my amp by running it at a 2ohm load? what do you guys think. thanks.

Over time it may very well damage the amplifier. This amp is not designed to operate at 2 ohm mono. In the meantime expect it to get really hot, may pop fuses, will definitely shut down due to excessive heat and may melt the voicecoils of the sub (too much power = smelly speaker syndrome and this amp at 2 ohm mono is going to be in the neighbourhood of 500w rms + ). So I would not recommend it.

so do you think i could wire the amp to just one coil of the 4ohm dvc sub? the jl sub is rated at 300w but as long as i dont exceed 500w supposely i should be fine. the amp is rated at 300w @ 4ohms. do you think thats too much power for one coil?

Remember that the power handling of the sub is going to be down by 50% with using only one coil. If you want to be safe, wire the sub in series to 8 ohm and call it a day until you either replace the sub or replace the amp. You can try the one coil approach, nothing wrong with that at all save for the fact that you have too much power still so watch the gain setting, watch the time you play the sub and watch the level that you leave the volume at. If you do not allow those coils to cool, you will be buying a new sub sooner rather than later.
