I have a BostonAcoustics G51044 (10", dual 4ohm) with a GTR PR. I had them in a 1.8cube box, feeding the G5 about 125Wrms. It was pretty loud for only 125watts, went really low (b/c of huge box). Boston recommends only .5cubic' for both the G51055 and GTR. So, I built one. At first, it didn't impress me (at all!). It was about half as loud as before (I'm even exaggeating!), and didn't go as low as I wanted -even with 4 times the tuning weights installed in the GTR. Before, in the 1.8cube box, I only had 1 in it. BTW, Boston only ships the GTR with 2. I got them to send me 4 more. -later on that.

Earlier today, I upped the power to 500Wrms because I have it in the right sized box (I was worried about overexcursion in the huge box, I held off on the power until I got that right) and WOW! Huge increase! I still don't think it goes as low as before (1.8cube, 125Wrms, 1/4 of weight in PR) but the SPL and SQ got a HUGE improvement. Now, I've got more trunk room (the box is about 4 times smaller!).

I was looking forward to the 6dB increase (4times the power)! Thanks for looking. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Found this article written by Robert Silva. The article didn't include power compression or other variables.

In order for one amplifier to reproduce sound twice as loud as another in Decibels you need 10 times more wattage output. An amplifier rated at 100 WPC is capable of twice the volume level of a 10 WPC amp, an amplifier rated at 100 watts per channel needs to be 1,000 watts per channel to be twice as loud. In other words, the relationship between volume and wattage output is logarithmic rather than linear.

Thanks. I was just refering to the 'twice the power = 3dB increase' theory. With 4 times the power, I assumed i'll 'gain 6dBs'.

That is also ignoring things like power compression, thermal compression, amplifier efficiency, electrical system stability, etc. All these things will have a play on your final results as well.

True, even though I have no idea what they are 6 db increase for me -- posted image. ! My electrical system is stable, that's all I know.

Could you -briefly, I don't want you to complicate things too much!- explain power and thermal compression?
