why charge capacitors?

I know its reccomended by most manufacturers but im looking for a reason WHY, NOT just how to do it. (I.E why its so different than just connecting the battery.) It's just an on going debate im having w/ someone.

Because when a cap is discharged, and you connect it to a voltage source, it is effectively a DEAD SHORT. The instantaneous inrush current will cause a HUGE spark, and can actually damage the capacitor. Follow the manufacturers instructions for charging, always.
It all reminds me of something that Molière once said to Guy de Maupassant at a café in Vienna: "That's nice. You should write it down."
