ive been researching new car stereos to replace my factory 2001 mach 460 deck. crutchfield states that only a single din radio will fit. wouldnt a din and a half radio fiT in the opening. has anyone tryed this approach or installed one in the mach 460 place?

Personally I wouldn't do a din and a half in anything other than a chevy or chrysler. I can't picture your dash right now but I think the factory radio is actually a double din. If you want a bigger radio then you should jump to a double din. But either way you will have to fabricate a kit to make it to work right(actually I think metra has a kit for the double din or two single din's to mount).

yeah its the mach 460 6 disk in dash changer...i think its a din and half size but a single din wouldnt look good in such a big space. i havnt seen many custom installs done on this system using an aftermarket radio thats larger size.

I found this page a while ago when I needed help with this system.  Hopefully it'll help you some too.  It's a whole series of pages just for the mach 460 system.  http://www.dinotheo.com/carstereo.htm

BTW only DINs will fit this system.  There's two of them, but they have a spacer in between and that would prevent you from using a double din.

well the above information is incorrect for a 2001 mustang. the mach system in the 2001 and up are din and half 6 disk changers in dash. thats why i asked if a din and half stereo would fit this space.

Sorry I'm a moronmach 460 replacement -- posted image..  Anyways, assuming your head unit looks like this:

then you are gonna need a dash kit like American International's FMK550  to install a regular din unit, and a whole bunch of creativity to install a din and a half.mach 460 replacement -- posted image..  This is a wierd size opening, it's almost a double-din but it's about 1/8" to 1/4" too short.  But it's not short enough to be the din and a half either.

I guess if you cut out the pocket that's part of the kit, but left the frame part intact, then you could probably fit a din and a half in there.  But then there's the problem of how you're gonna mount it--try using the backstrap adaptor that's part of the kit.  It's a slide type thing that lets you mount it at different heights so it might just do the trick for you. Good luck!

I dunno if this is what you're looking for?  They don't have a picture unfortunately.

I have an '02 stang. It's a 1 1/2 din. I found a cover plate at a local audio store (that's unfortunately out of business now) that allows for a single din HU, with a small storage area above it (about the size of 2 CD cases). The only bad part to it is the way it secures the HU. There isn't much holding the HU in place, so it constantly skips from excessive bass. I've been trying to find a solution to that for a while. It's already backstrapped, but that's not enough!
