Ok, does anyone know off the top of their heads if the Jetta MKIV(1999-2004) have 3-wire positive door locks or negative? Or is it the 5-wire switching setup?
I tested it and I thought it was 3 wire negative but that never worked no matter how hard I tried. Do you think I need a relay hooked up to it also or straight out of the alarm will work? Thanks so much. I hate leaving my car unlocked anywhere.
I ask because I want to install an old cheesy Micro DLR4HD alarm b/c my mom lost all the keys but the valet key so I can't control the door locks from outside the car. Plus my driver side door handle has the only keyhole on the entire car and it stopped working so I can't lock my doors with the key anymore.
I figured if I put this alarm in just for the lock/unlock portion of it, it will solve my problems and I wont have to go to the dealership for another key.

Driver's door loom running across door backwards from window motor, test all I think blue yellow can't remember but lock and unlock both negative, extend lock pulse to close windows and roof, don't dial in autolock as these deadlock the car. Some versions need a double unlock pulse, N.B. Mk IV has electric solenoids NOT vacuum pumps.

PS If your key doesn't lock first check the fuses in the car, if that's not the answer, fitting an alarm won't help you!

The key not locking the door is a mechanical problem, not electrical.
I do NOT have the stock key's with the buttons on them, they were lost.
I DO have the Valet key which lets me start the car.
Thanks so much for your reply, its cleared up a few things.
I really dont want to rip the door open. Right now the entire driver's side lower portion of the dash is out and the kick panel so that I can access the wires from there. So you're saying that it has the 3-wire negative setup like in Micro's manual?

It appears as Howie mentioned.  You need to get your door lock wires inside the  driver door.  Its not blue / YELLOW but yellow/blue for power lock and it would be GREEN/ red(double pulse) unlock and can be found at a harness going along the side in the middle.

VW didn't make it easy for you. You'll have to go into the door.
I did a '99 Jetta, which I think is the same. It wasn't hard to get the door panel off, and there was plenty of room inside the factory boot to run the wires. It was much easier than I thought.
If you ONLY care about doorlocks, and you're not worried about hooking up starter kill, parking lights, and so forth, you could find constant power inside the door, and do the WHOLE install there, brain and all.
I'm sure if you look around Volkswagen forums online, probably someone has made a post, with pictures, about how to replace the front speakers........that should show you how the door panel comes off.
P.S. I'm sure you know this, but in the event the car's battery dies, the keyless entry won't help you. If the exterior doorlock doesn't get fixed, you'll have a hard time getting in.

If the keyhole in the drivers door isn't operating the locks, you have an issue that needs to be fixed first. VW uses a pair of microswitches on the mechanism to lock and unlock the doors, turning the key activates the solenoid. Typical germans, a simple function is overly complicated as far as how it is implemented!
You may get lucky and it is a failure of the switches. You can still merrily do an aftermarket system, it will still do locks, may be a little harder to test for the correct wires. I would get that fixed first. makes life a lot easier. They do have a mechanical failsafe that allows the drivers door to be opened with the key with a bit of force, btw, in the event of a dead battery.
To getthe door panel off, you will need a phillips and a T20. There are 3 T20 along the bottom edge of the panel, a phillips at the front edge up by the mirror. Next, pop out the insert right where your hand goes when you close the door, it goes straight inward towards the panel. Once that is out, the controls pop straight up. Unplug, remove, etc. (Roll down window first. Easier to get panel on and off). You will see 3 large goldish phillips. Remove. That is it for screws. Starting at the bottom, pop the panel off. The top comes straight up. Do this carefully, as the cable for the opening handle only has so much slack. To remove the cable from the handle, there is a release clip. Lift a bit, slide back, and away from the panel, and unhook. Unplug your mirror controls, then the lower switches, then the LED. You are in!
There are a few good tutorials over at VWVortex with pics on how to get that panel off. Pretty easy once you have taken one off. To diagnose your locking issues, it is very helpful to find someone with a Vag Com scan tool in your area. Nice thing about the complexity of the electrical system, it is easy to hunt down a specific non functioning switch with the right scanner (wonderful thing called "measuring blocks" that you can monitor the function of anything electrical in the car....... easy way to find anything from a bad door latch switch to a malfunctioning N75 valve!)
Wherever I go, that is where I end up......
