I just bought my car and unfortunately it did not come with a remote. The alarm is so far up my dash I cannot get to it to find out what model it is, but know it is a Clifford. I have done a lot of research, but with not a lot of luck. I know this about it. It has a 518c siren, a flat cable that comes out of it (looks like a phone line), and it has a Intellistart 4 system. I can see the alarm from under my dash but the Intellistart 4 system is stuck to the back of it so I can't tell what model it is. From my research it sounds like its a Clifford Avantguard 4 or 5. It also has Directed Electronics on the alarm. Any way you can tell by wire colors or anything like that?

Pull the brain down to confirm a part # before you waste your time (and money) getting the wrong remote (because you didn't pull the brain down to get a part #)

Your pin code to control alarm is 2, ie star side of valet twice then plain side once with ignition turned on. This should turn the alarm on or off, if so all you need is a G4/5 remote, programme it as per the instructions in owners manual or down load from the websight and away you go. Its either a  Concept 450 or 550 If the valet switch doesnt work, you will have to go to a directed dealer and have them use Wizard software to sort out your problem. This will cost you on the labour as they will need to strip down to get at the alarm and plug in the software lead.

can I use either one of the remotes? or do I have to get the model number to see if its a g4 or g5? I guess what I'm asking is are the 2 remotes interchangeable?

Yes if you did what Itld you to do and it works; you will have to download the owner's manual.
