I'm mainly interested in the remote start feature, and not so much in the alarm part.  234,000 mile daily driver.  Just want to start it up early so the AC/heater gets a head start before I get there.

Car has power locks so that feature would be nice.

I would like a display on the remote to see if vehicle is indeed running or not.

Need really good range as I park far away and out of site.

Is the price on the Viper 5500 for real($450)?  That is just insane; how is that justified?

How about the "Thor" or is it a piece of junk?

Or one of these generic ones?

Or this commando one?

Does anyone have experience with these units?  Or is there a superior solution out there compared to these?

Thanks.

Is it an automatic or standard?
Also, does it start easy with the key, especially when the car is cold? Or does it require that you give it some gas? Something to consider considering the age and mileage of the car. If it doesn't start right up, you may have trouble remote starting it.
Links to eBay do not work on this site. I searched for the item numbers in your post and found the items. I would avoid Thor and Commando. The remotes that have the flip open door will probably break fairly easy.
The Viper unit has a recommended installed price of $450. They are not supposed to be sold uninstalled. You may find one on ebay for cheaper, but keep in mind it won't have much of a warranty. Replacement parts are easily found on eBay. The other units won't have much of a warranty either, but it will also be very difficult to get replacement parts. More than likely you would have to buy a whole new unit if something goes wrong....like a broken remote.
Out of the ones you listed, I would go with the Viper one first, and then the Ultrastart. I wouldn't bother with the other units.

It's automatic and it starts without needing to use the throttle pedal.

The Ultra Start 3285 looks pretty good.  I might go with a Viper if I could find one for a reasonable price.

Thanks very much.

Ok, I ordered the 3285 from the only place I could find it:

I used Google Checkout so hopefully I can get some reprieve if there is any funny business concerning it never arriving or something along those lines.

Looking forward to installing it:

The install manual seems decent..

Thanks for the info.

It showed up on Friday and the box appears to have never been opened, so I guess that place is legit.  I'll install it soon.
