Hey all, will be working on a 2008, toyota rav 4 shortly. the paperwork says it may or may not have a transponder system. Is there a way (maybe the key) that you can tell before hand if it is so equiped with a transponder. Was hoping to grab a module before the install if needed.

Always have a module and be prepared to use it. We(our shop) have figured out that you have to look for something under the key cylinder. It is a black plug . If plugged in then it has a transponder. If there is a plug that is loose(not connected to anything) then it does not.

all canadian vehicles made 2008 plus

are required by law to have a factory immobilizer

so yes it should have one

If there is a security light next to the heater controls it has it. If not, then not. I'd say i see about 60% with....

That's interesting what robertsc said about Canadian models, and I do remember hearing that somewhere too.

For the U.S. RAV4, only the Limited trimline, with automatic climate controls, has the immobilizer key.

Base U.S. RAV4s (with three-knob manual climate control) do not have an immobilizer.

9. IMMOBILIZERS

Every passenger vehicle, multipurpose passenger vehicle, truck and 3 wheeled vehicle manufactured after September 1, 2007 and with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) less than 4,536 kg (10,000 lbs), except an emergency vehicle or a walk-in van, must be equipped with an immobilization system as per the requirements of CMVSS 114
