Hello
Took me a while to find the right place for my query and this is it!
I would like to ask your expert opinion(s) about an alarm I am planning to buy for my 106 Peugeot Quiksilver.
I want to buy a quality-build alarm that can perform the following functions:
1) I want the alarm to be able NOT to flash any lights NOR sound the
siren in case of brake-in to the car. In other words, I don't want to
deter the thief - I intend to call the police straight away, as this
isn't the first time the car is broken into. So the alarm must be able
to alert me ONLY via the remote fob (vibration or flashing.. or
both!).
2) My car is parked up to some 300 meters away from home and I don't
have a clear direct sight to it i.e. there are other
houses/cars/obstacles around (but still with the 300m range). I
therefore need the fob/remote to be able to receive feedback within
that range, regarding the status of the car, and of course, alert me
if its broken into!
3) - Will the supplied standard Shock Sensor detect door opening
(since there isn't any vibration if done slowly)?! I would be choosing
an Microwave sensor if I had an option, but it would go over my budget
at this time. A DEI rep told me that 'door opening' is a standard functionality and that all models can detect and raise the alarm if someone opens the door (without vandalizing the vehicle)
From what I 've read, I know I definately need a 2-way pager. Based on
spec and budget, I was looking at the following 3 in order of preference as they appear:
a) Viper 3000
b) Hornet 745
c) Avistart 4400
Now, I am not an expert. Two days ago I didn't know a thing about car alarms, but now I ve done some reading and got some basic understanding of technologies and brands/models. Having said that, I tend to prefer the Viper 3000, which although an outdated model compared to the 3002, it seems that
it shares similar functionality with the 3002 model, right? I am only
concerned if it has the required range and silent mode - in other words what I mention in (1) and (2). Is the 3000 up to the job for me?
The Hornet 745 is closely second favourite for me as it stands, but I am a bit worried that it has even slightly less range than the Viper (1/4mile vs 1000feet i.e. 400 vs 300 meters). From what I ve read, both can also alert via the 2-way fob. Hornet's only benefit over the Viper was that it has an LCD instead of a LED.
My 3rd choice was the Avistart 4400. I was really excited with it at first as it has all features of the other two, plus remote starter and colour LCDs. Later on I read that the remote starter feature is only available on automatic transmission vehicles (can anyone confirm this?) and also read a few negative comments regarding the reliability of the alarm/remote.
Based on my 3 main requirements above, which one of these 3 alarms should I go for (assuming they all cost the same)?
Thank you!

ok lemme start, to start with all the alarms can function without the siren and the lights being connected, no problem there, secondly, the alarm once installed properly will detect the opening off doors, trunk, bonnet and impact to the vehicle, again standard, ur problem lies with the distance ur vehicle is being parked, with the systemz above the advertised range is clear line of sight, i have a feeling those systems won't page you over that distance you want, i think the better bet would be the dei systems with spread spectrum technology (sst). the advertised clear line of sight range reaches up to a mile. p.s i'm installin for three years and i love dei systems, they're all i install, so you could hold on for posts from others who may be famliar with other brands that may do the same for you.

Thank you!
It's really good you cleared these out for me. Still having to worry about the range is still of an issue, quite essential one I must say. Maybe I should try and park my car closer, although not always possible.
One other reason I went for those systems, and particularly the Viper/Hornet is that it is said they are more quality build - and I always tend to sacrifise few extra features if I am to gain on quality/reliability. There are many cheap 2-way pagers out there, offering more features, over 3000ft range, but-it doesn't even have a name of the manufacturer. Most of these come half the price of a Viper and usually imported from Hong Kong. But I decided to keep away from these.
So, still no prefs to any of those 3 alarms I mentioned?
Regards.

i know there is a remote start and alarm combo that is simlar to the Viper 160XVL but i know that isn't the right one that is just the starter but it is the only system that has a range of 1 mile but with out line of sight about 1/2 a mile we tested it when we first got the system into the shop (where is used to work) we had the car in the garage and went down the road 1/2 mile before it stoped working

Based upon that I should estimate that the 1/4 mile range (400meters) of the Viper 3000 becomes more like 200meter when out of sight on an 'average' 1-block radius - but as I said, only an estimate. If that's the case I would have to park my car really close!
Does anyone happen to have experience on any of the alarms I mentioned. Did they ever managed to get a 1-block range from their remotes?
The only good thing so far is that I managed to find a good quote for installation from an certified DEI technician here in Greece - just 50 euros.

might check into a viper 5900. it's a two way paging alarm/remote start with up to a 1 mile (1600 meter) range. your downfall will be wanting a remote start on a manual trans. not sure about where you are located, but you might have to look at getting a DEI 689M to work for your manual trans and a remote start. other option might be the link below. but i can't seem to find the range of that one.

since it's preference ur asking for, i'd say the avistart 4400, my favourite out of the three choices u gave, but, you asked specifically for around 300 metres of range or more, so like aother kelly said, the viper 5900 is an excellent choice.

@ jmw505:

Are you talking about the Viper3000? If that's the case, it should well work for me range-wise as all I want is coverage for about 300meters.
And yes, Viper5900 would be the ultimate solution, but didn't mentioned it in first place as it goes over my budget. I m not really bothered about the remote start feature, although if the case is the same as it might be for the Avital, it won't work for my car (it's a manual)

thats what i was talking about and i guess they changed theit model numbers i got the old guile and also i have it in my car but if you can only find the combo then you can just keep the remote start off by not adding the bypass or bypassing the cluch or keeping the toggle switch off
