Alright guys I'm new here so take it easy on me. I recently picked up a 1998 Explorer as a work car and today got bored and decided to hook up keyless entry and remote start. Got the keyless entry part done but can't seem to get the remote start to work. To start off, the system is a code alarm 500. It was free and brand new. The explorer has the thinner of the ford keys but there is still a theft light that flashes when the car is off. It doesn't seem to have a factory alarm installed. Checked by locking the doors and waiting then opening them through the drivers window. As I said earlier, I think I have all the wires but 2 or 3 hooked up correctly. The keyless entry works perfectly which is really all I wanted but I figured I'd give the remote start a shot. I haven't had to use any relays yet and I'm figuring that I'll need one for one of the wires that I have left to hook up. Here's the one's giving me problems.

Brown wire- positive shutdown input 1- I didn't hook this up b/c I tied into the brake for another positive input but do I need this hooked up?

Yellow w/ Black- +12 volt alarm by-pass output- Don't have a clue where this goes.

Blue w/ Black - Active output (-) ignition 3/ shock disable output- Don't have a clue where this goes.

Then I have another 4 pin harness that I didn't even plug in b/c it doesn't sound like I'd need any of the things it says. They are green w/ black, blue, black w/ red, and black w/ yellow.

The car doen't even attempt to start so I figure I'm needing to hook one of those wires up somewhere. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

The purpose of the positive shutdown is if you remote start the vehicle, somebody gets in and depresses the brake pedal to put the vehicle in gear, it kills the engine.

The 12 volt alarm bypass is the wire that powers the bypass module. That is the module that you would put a key in and mount under the dash, if needed.

Shock disable output is to interrupt the input from the shock sensor when the vehicle is remote started.

i don't understand where you hooked that brown wire,If that brown wire is recieving 12V the remote start won't start.That brown wire goes to your brake light wire that only gets fed when you hit the brakes.

I guess this unit has 2 postive shut downs. I hooked up the first one to the brake pedal. It was Brown w/ Red. The diagram says the brown wire is for an existing hood pin switch. Basically one that turns a light on under the hood. I don't have a light under the hood. I was just wondering if I still had to hook it into another + input and if so what else would I tie it into? The brake is already taken and I don't know of any other source. Maybe emergency brake?

on the last link, I didn't wire up that 4 pin harness b/c it didn't seem that any of them fit my application. On the second link, the blue and black is the wire that I'm talking about. And on the first link, the brown one I didn't hook up. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

did you program the tach?It will not start untill you go thru the programing process for tach/tachless.You have the correct wire to the brake light (brn/red).Are you sure the brown wire isn't for the siren?

I programmed the tach. There is no siren on this unit. It's just keyless entry and remote start. I think I'm missing something somewhere with a relay. I would have figured I would have to have a relay to get it to start but the manual says nothing about a relay except with that blue w/ black wire. That's why I figured I needed it hooked up. I didn't put the hood pin in yet but it shouldn't matter because all it does is complete a (-) circuit when the hood opens so not being installed shouldn't affect it. If I just knew if I need them wires hooked up or not. I checked everything before I put it back together and i'm 99% sure I have all the other wires hooked up correctly. Thanks.

I am not that familiar with that unit and I don't have a manual in front of me.From what I can see the blue/blk is a ign 3 output.you don't need this wire connected.The other brown (+)shut down wire is not needed either.make sure the gray/blk isn't grounded.is there a start activation wire that when grounded starts the car,if so try to ground that wire and see what happens.does the parking lights flash at all when you try to remote start it.they should flash a certain amount of times giving you a code of why it's not starting.

That's kind of where I'm at. The parking lights don't flash any code. The car doesn't even attempt to start. The keyless entry portion works flawlessly. I don't have the blue w/ black hooked up, nor the brown. The other gray I just cut off b/c I wasn't using it. What start activation wire are you talking about? I don't see one. I'm going to scan one more page in here in a minute.
